ICEGATE Registration: Complete Guide

The Central Board of Indirect Taxes & Customs of India(CBIC) operates its national portal, the Indian Customs Electronic Gateway (ICEGATE). Importers, exporters, freight carriers, and other business partners can use the Customs department’s electronic filing services through this website. EXIM trading is made more accessible due to the simplified customs clearance process.

In addition to its online applications, ICEGATE offers information on export compliance, shipping bills, guidance and advice for exporters, and government actions. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI), nationalized banks, and the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), among others, are all connected to the portal internally.

Why ICEGATE Registration?

To submit important papers like Bills of Entry and Shipping Bills electronically, users must first register with ICEGATE. All or any specified EDI customs port can be used with just one ICEGATE registration.

ICEGATE Registration is also done for –

  • The Export General Manifest (EGM)
  • The Import General Manifest (IGM)
  • Consol Manifest
  • Export
  • Import

Incorporating ICEGATE has increased transparency and accountability in Customs. It has also assisted the relevant department in receiving fewer importer and exporter complaints about late shipments.

ICEGATE's main advantages are as follows -

  • Electronic filing of export and import declarations is made possible through the portal.
  • After evaluating Bills of Entry and Shipping Bills, customs can communicate with importers and exporters.
  • This tool allows importers and exporters to check the status of their electronic documents at any time.
  • The portal helps pose questions and get quick responses.

With ICEGATE Registration, businesspeople, cargo carriers, and other Customs Department personnel can track the whereabouts of goods and the progression of invoices. Companies can benefit from this fact in many ways.

Documents required for the ICEGATE Registration process

  • IEC
  • National Identification Cards: Aadhaar, Driver’s License, Voter ID, and Passport
  • An Export License

In addition, you may be asked to provide other paperwork if you apply for a specific type of ICEGATE registration (customs broker, IEC holder, shipping agent, etc.).

ICEGATE Registration without DSC

The Government of India’s official web platform is called ICEGATE. Facilities belonging to both exporters and importers are provided. However, the usual ICEGATE registration involves a digital signature, PAN verification, and extra clearance.

To simplify the ICEGATE registration and invite more importers/exporters to get ICEGATE registration, a new simplified auto ICEGATE registration service is made accessible. The ICEGATE registration process has been streamlined such that a Digital Signature Certificate and the submission of any supporting documents are no longer required.

Simplified Auto ICEGATE Registration Process

  • Visit the ICEGATE website.
  • Follow and locate the registration link on the homepage. Click the “Simplified Registration” link on the “Sign Up” page of the Central Board of Excise & Customs’s e-commerce portal to create an account.
  • Use the portal-issued temporary password and the IEC and GSTIN to log in.
  • Fill out the ICEGATE registration form with the necessary information.
  • Enter your ICEGATE ID and Password
  • The applicant will receive two separate OTPs via email and text.
  • Register successfully by entering valid OTPs
  • Double-check your work before hitting the “Finish” button.

If applicants wish to alter their email address or any other information provided during the ICEGATE registration process, they can do so by selecting the “Click Here” option. As a result, they will need to exchange a secondary email address and phone number. An OTP will then be delivered and sent to the secondary email address.

The ICEGATE Registration Module has been streamlined so that new users can join without uploading a Digital Signature Certificate (DSC), verifying their Permanent Account Number (PAN), uploading any supporting documents, or going through an approval process.

Those who have obtained an IEC but have their auto registered in the Simplified Auto Registration category are not allowed to submit any Customs paperwork. To be able to file customs paperwork, IEC holders must first change their Simplified Registration to an IEC registration with DSC.

  • Navigate to the Simplified to DSC link in the left panel.
  • Review the already entered data, choose the Custom Location, and click the Confirm button.

  • The next screen will read, “Your Information has been received successfully, and you will be alerted by email as soon as your registration is confirmed by the competent authority” once you’ve clicked the Confirm button.
